The case study reveals the technology behind the infrastructure developed to connect international payments to the Pix ecosystem.
Pix has transformed the way Brazil pays. AstraPay is working to extend that experience beyond Brazil’s borders.
With proprietary technology and an infrastructure designed for cross-border operations, AstraPay created its International Pix solution, capable of connecting international networks and users to Brazil’s instant payment ecosystem.
This development has now been featured in a new case study published by Dati, AstraPay’s partner in building the cloud infrastructure that supports the operation.
A New Connection Between Pix and the Global Market
One of the main challenges in international payments is enabling communication between ecosystems built on different standards, technologies, and infrastructures.
On one side are international card networks. On the other is Brazil’s instant payment infrastructure.
The technology developed by AstraPay creates an interoperability layer between these two environments, allowing a transaction initiated on an international network to be converted and processed within the Pix ecosystem.
In practice, the solution enables international users to make payments in Brazil through an experience integrated with Pix, using payment instruments issued abroad.
The first phase of the operation focuses on Inbound flows, connecting international users and payment methods to Pix in Brazil. The product roadmap also includes Outbound flows, with the goal of extending this interoperability to Brazilian users making payments abroad.
Brazilian Technology Built to Operate at Global Scale
Turning this concept into an operational financial infrastructure required the coordinated development of several areas.
AstraPay structured its operation by combining proprietary technology, regulatory development, foreign exchange operations, and connectivity with global payment networks.
As an official UnionPay member in Brazil, the company integrated its ecosystem with an international network present in more than 180 countries and territories, creating a new bridge between global payment methods and Brazil’s financial infrastructure.
Supporting this operation also required a technology architecture capable of processing high-frequency transactions, handling financial integrations, managing messaging between different networks, and meeting requirements for availability, security, traceability, and scalability.
It was at this stage that Dati began working alongside AstraPay.
AstraPay and Dati: From Architecture to Operation
As a specialist in the AWS ecosystem, Dati participated in the design and implementation of the production infrastructure for International Pix in the cloud.
The project involved creating an architecture based on microservices, infrastructure automation, continuous delivery pipelines, messaging systems, databases, backup systems, monitoring, and scalability mechanisms.
The infrastructure was built so that the technology developed by AstraPay could progress from an initial testing environment to a financial operation prepared for real-world scale.
According to the case study published by Dati, the architecture can perform stages including communication between international networks, transaction processing, foreign exchange quotation, and Pix generation in a flow that can take between 1 and 2 seconds, maintaining an experience close to the speed Brazilian Pix users are already accustomed to.
During the initial and controlled phases of operation, the infrastructure also processed millions of Brazilian reais in transaction volume, according to the data presented in the case study.
A New Chapter for International Payments
The evolution of International Pix represents a strategic move for AstraPay: transforming one of the world’s most significant instant payment infrastructures into a connection point with other markets.
By developing technology capable of creating interoperability between Pix and international networks, AstraPay expands the potential uses of Brazil’s payment infrastructure and advances the development of a new generation of cross-border payments.
Brazilian technology, global infrastructure, and an experience designed to make borders increasingly invisible when it comes time to pay.
The case study published by Dati provides a detailed look at the technical challenges, the AWS architecture, and the behind-the-scenes implementation of the infrastructure supporting this operation.
